MOVEMENT

In the morning, Tutors introduced design sheets and show the work done by previous students.

Research sheet:

1.including primary & secondary research, showing clear link between the two.

2.with initial drawings, not designs.

3. material research.

Idea development sheet:

1. including idea factory, idea development , technical drawings.

Final outcome sheet:

1.including drawings, rendering and place to use it

2. show how to use the product clearly.

In the afternoon, I made a sketch model and improved my idea again to get the final one.

As the image below illustrate, I used two triangle pieces instead of saddle shape.

Contextual study

DESIGN PEOPLE

key points :

1.design some thing half leave the other to users

2.user is designer

3.users should not be only human. [animals , plants], design is a trap

WORK SHEET 11

1.intended users :

The people sit at the back of the room who cannot see the blackboard or cannot hear clearly .

2.

3.questions for users :

Do they sit comfortable on the saddle shape chair?

Do they feel pleasure when “riding” the chair?

4.How does your Movement design respond to these issues?

I realized saddle is a product created to ensure riders will not fall down from the running horses which is movement objects.

So, I research the structure of saddle and understand the usage of each part of it [ seat, horn, stirrup, etc]

since stamping the stirrups, the horse will stand up . I  imagined maybe when users stamp the stirrups of my product, the chair will be taller.

List users/participants/social groups that you are interested in working with in future projects:

animals: pets, wildlife, endangered, farming, biodiversity, distinct animals

Feedback and conclusion

It is my first time for me to design a sustainable product. It also offer me a new way of product design which means I choose sustainability, user experience or  problem solving to start a project.

Coconut is a popular drinking and food today. However, the shell of it is still a waste and sustainable. That's the reason Why I Choose coconut.

I will make this product into a system to show how users interact with it.

 MOVEMENT

During the research week [ 10.28 ~11.03], I went to hyde park , V&A museum and Harrods to start research of movement.

At the beginning of this project, We start from a lecture which is a introduction of different 'movements' used in product, jewellery and architecture. I really like the design called 'veasable ~ privacy shell shoulder bag'. like its name said, it is a shoulder bag that two users  can be covered to ensure their privacy may not be attacked. Users in this product need to move the shell bag so it makes this product more interaction and makes a attractive finishing point for the whole design.  From my observation, I think movement in product can make it more interactive.

For another product, 'Conceptroom Huisraad: Nomadic Furniture (2014)' by Makkink & Bey which is a bag can released to be a bed.It is designed for travellers I think because the idea of it is easy to understand. After seeing that product, I imagined the ancient Chinese school box which can be used as dinner table, bookcase and even pillow for students who need to walk a long distance to the capital city to take exams that time. So, multifunctional and biotics are another features for 'movement products'.

In the afternoon, we started with the brain storm of seat types, actions and movements.

Then turn to idea factory process, we picked 3 word from the each list and create ideas.

After tutorial, I realised I should focus on the package of lipstick because the package of my client is not sustainable. Also, my client said she often uses lipstick because of dry weather.

2020/01/6

On January 6, I visited the chelsea physic garden and surveyed the plants and landscape there.

In addition to the plants, the birds and other animals can be heard in the garden. There are benches and tables for people to rest.
It is a good place for picnicing and gardening.

But the view in the vity is quite dirty and not clean{ see research in RESEARCH }

Most of the waste in the sity are food waste and hard to clean[ like chew gum}

2020/01/9

Today, we visit Chelsea physic garden again and start secondary research.

During the contextual section, I deeply understand the user based design and ethics of design.

After idea generation, I pick THE EATABLE LUNCH BOX to develop.

Drawing of my initial idea:

However, After tutorial, Tutor said the idea is interesting but I still need to think the form of it.

I did research of lunch sustainable lunch box ( see the research part) and start to develop this idea.

Today is the crit for Wildlife project.

My final outcomes

Concept:

Eatable Lunch box

This a meal box designed for visitors and animals in Chelsea Physic Garden. People can eat one part of the lunch box after lunch because it is made of rice cake and Tofu. The other part is for animals which is made by seeds. Visitors can feed the birds in the garden while eating their lunch.

Material :

Visitors lunch box: made by Rice cake and meal inside

Feeding box: made by seeds.

2019/11/05

After developing ideas of seating, in the morning, we had a group discussion and some students presented their ideas in the class.

I saw some classmates really got good ideas and when I presentation, I was a little bit nervous since it is unprepared and some professional words are hard to remember how to say in short time. I think I need to practise the presentation skills so I decide to explain my work infront of mirror every day.

In the afternoon, we started with a brain storm of materials, physical qualities ,methods of wrking and meanings

Structure analysis

Today , I did the research of structure of saddle chair.

1.gas pressure pump

cheap and easy for users to work, but it is very dangerous since the inside gas may cause exploding.

2. single pulley

physics method , safe, but the weight of masses need to be controlled.44.jpg

3. improved : two pulleys structure. User stamp , so the inside column will go up.

CONTEXTUAL PRACTISE

DESIGN HISTORY

1.new technology will not necessarily replaced old technology , but it will date it.

2. modernism

Worksheet 12

Which Inventions did you research?

Airplane , tooth brush

Which Invention did you select to present?

Tooth brush

How was this invention developed/ tested/ designed?

The toothbrush as we know it today was not invented until 1938. However, early forms of the toothbrush have been in existence since 3000 BC. Ancient civilizations used a "chew stick," which was a thin twig with a frayed end. These 'chew sticks' were rubbed against the teeth.

The bristle toothbrush, similar to the type used today, was not invented until 1498 in China. The bristles were actually the stiff, coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog's neck and attached to handles made of bone or bamboo.

Boar bristles were used until 1938, when nylon bristles were introduced by Dupont de Nemours. The first nylon toothbrush was called Doctor West's Miracle Toothbrush. Later, Americans were influenced by the disciplined hygiene habits of soldiers from World War II. They became increasingly concerned with the practice of good oral hygiene and quickly adopted the nylon toothbrush.

Which Art and Design ‘ism’ would you revive? (Think about artists and designers that influence your work and research the ideas and context of their work)

Minimalism ,memphis design,

Minimalism is a extreme cold style because only the functional parts are showed in front of  the users and colour of these products are white , grey and black

Personally, I am agree with that “extracting all the decoration, only demonstrate the functional  parts”. However, the cold style is not friendly enough for users.

So, lots of designer today add a little bit decoration in their design to make them more warm.

Reflection After Tutorial

My initial idea is a Earphone shape charging battery for electric cars.

Users can borrow the batteries from the charging site and return them after charging.

So they can charge at home and any time the users want.

However, After group discussion , Tutor mentioned that the car batteries may be quite heavy currently and for the technology today I cannot make it real.

I start to develop another idea which is making a app that let users changing their cars at the someone has home-charging sites.

Draft of user flow chart.
